The cannabis startup backed by former Speaker of the House John Boehner is set to become one of the most valuable companies in the U.S. weed industry.

Acreage Holdings is the latest U.S. cannabis firm to tap the public markets in Canada, where marijuana is legal, through a reverse takeover. The company raised $314 million in a private placement that values it at about $2.8 billion. Acreage shares are set to start public trading on Thursday.

Medical marijuana dispensary The Botanist coming to Seneca Street

The Botanist, a medical marijuana dispensary, will open Monday at 192 Seneca St., across from the Buffalo Transportation Pierce Arrow Museum, the company said in a release.

The dispensary will sell vape cartridges, tinctures and capsules. Products containing tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, and cannabidiol, or CBD, will be available, according to the company. THC is the psychoactive property in cannabis that makes users feel high. CBD has many of the same medical benefits, without the psychoactive side effects.

Citizens in four states vote Tuesday on ballot initiatives to legalize some form of cannabis. Residents of Missouri and Utah will decide on its medical availability, Michigan and North Dakota on recreational consumption for adults. If all four measures pass, the tally of states that allow some sort of cannabis use will jump to 32, nearly two-thirds of the U.S.

The Botanist, the first store in a planned national retail chain dispensing medical marijuana, opened Monday in Woodlawn.

The store at 7175 Security Boulevard will serve as the flagship site for a retail brand that owner Acreage Holdings plans to expand to 40 locations in several states by next year. Acreage, a cannabis operator founded in 2014 as High Street Capital Partners, runs growing, processing and dispensing facilities in 14 states. Former House speaker John Boehner serves on its board.
